The Barren County Historical Society was recently recognized by the Kentucky Historical Society during the state organization’s annual Kentucky History Awards.

Barren County’s local chapter received the Education Award for Public Programming.

“We had 11 programs in 2024 and they were all outstanding,” said Sam Terry, a Barren County historian and a member of the historical society. “I think a lot of people perhaps don’t recognize the fact that we bring in some very well-known speakers, and speakers that are highly sought after across the state of Kentucky.

“We bring them here to Glasgow, and thanks to the historical society, we can sponsor those people being here for our community to enjoy hearing and learn from.”

Terry said he traveled to the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in Frankfort to receive the award, adding that there was “a nice crowd.”

“It was very interesting to see historical societies from all around Kentucky and the awards they were receiving for their work,” he said. “A great variety of work and it made you proud to be from Barren County.”

Scott Alvey, executive director of the Kentucky Historical Society, stated in a press release that these awards “reflect the incredible work being done in every corner of Kentucky to preserve and share our rich and complex history.”

“We are proud to recognize these exceptional individuals and organizations,” he said. “For their commitment to historical scholarship and community engagement.”

Terry said the Barren County Historical Society’s programming for this year has a focus on local authors and books that they wrote.

Next Thursday, Jimmy Lowe will speak about Dr. W.A. Weldon’s book “David Goes to War” at 6 p.m. at the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center.
