This Saturday evening, the 14th annual Singing for Scholarships is set to take place at the Plaza Theatre in Glasgow.
The nonprofit Bobby Driver Memorial Scholarship Fund organization has brought countless local talents to the stage, raising $66,200 in scholarship monies for local kids, and it has all been done in honor of Coach Bobby Driver, who left a lasting impression on those he mentored.
He began his career in Hiseville. After that he went to Glasgow High School and then the Allen County school system before returning to Glasgow, where he finished his career coaching at Glasgow Middle School. He coached basketball, football and track.
“He was easy-going, a good listener, mild-mannered and an excellent personality for a coach and teacher,” said Betty Driver, his widow.
Coach Driver was also known for his generosity toward the kids he mentored.
“If they needed a uniform, or cleats, or anything he saw they needed, he would help them have that,” Betty said.
When Bobby died in 2005, Betty had a vision to keep his legacy alive.
“The first year, we made a cookbook that made $7,000. That got the ball rolling,” Betty said.
After that, Betty formed a board of directors, and Singing for Scholarships found a voice of its own in the community. The president of the board is Owen Lambert, who was a student of Driver’s.
Each year, Singing For Scholarships chooses a different theme. This year’s theme is Shadows of the Past. The featured artist is High Fidelity. Other guests to the stage include: Jeff Bruce, Sam Day Dickinson, Byron Lucas, Brian Pack, Reagan Blair, Lauren Gatewood, Kayla Kaumanns, Lucy Richardson, Hailey Wyatt, Amy Gill, Josh Garrett and Kevin Poynter.
Kellie McKay and Haylin Adams will host the event. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7.
Tickets are $12 and can be purchased at www.historicplaza.org
