If you were a child in the 70s or 80s, growing up in South Central Kentucky, there is a good chance you have fond memories of Wondering Woods and Tranquil Valley Village. The theme park which offered a historic experience was a replica 1800s village nestled in the hills and hollows near Mammoth Cave National Park. A small cave was the central feature of the village tour.
Blacksmithing demonstrations, white bean soup and cornbread, stick candy at the General Store, a watermill and an old-fashioned ice cream shop were part of the experience. Trinkets like wooden popguns and Laura Ingalls style bonnets could be purchased to commemorate the trip.
One of the most iconic structures in the valley was Harmony Tower, a rotund rock building.
After many years of success under the guidance of the Hogan Family, the village closed. In 2019, Mammoth Cave National announced they were purchasing the property with hopes of doing cave tours again. The cave is not part of the Mammoth Cave system, but a neighboring cavern.
This week Mammoth Cave announced it is bringing back tours of Wondering Woods cave, and into the area where the village once stood.
The Wondering Woods Tour will include a bus ride with an informative and educational ranger. Tourists can hike in the Tranquil Valley of Wondering Woods and take a short cave tour.
The tour is approximately 1.5 hours, is suitable for all ages, and the moderate hike with 140 stairs is 1 mile long.
Reservations are not required, but are highly recommended. For more information, visit:
