In 2023, the Glasgow Garden Club plans to celebrate 90 years of growing strong in Glasgow and Barren County.
“It was formed in 1933 and federated in 1937,” said the club’s president, Glenda Eaton.
“We belong to Cardinal Council of Bowling Green, Dogwood District of Kentucky, Garden Club of Kentucky, and the South Atlantic Region and the National Garden Club,” Eaton said.
Although much has changed in the world since 1933, the mission of the Glasgow Garden Club as well as many of the activities have remained the same. Even those not familiar with the club, its members or its endeavors have likely appreciated the club unknowingly.
“For several years, the club has provided the beautiful hanging baskets around the square in downtown Glasgow,” Eaton said. The 36 baskets are filled in all seasons by way of corporate and private donors.

Other club activities include maintaining the entrance to the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery, providing flowers for Beula C. Nunn Park, providing floral arrangements for the annual Glasgow Highland Games, weeding and planting flowers at the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center and weeding and planting flowers at T.J. Samson Community Hospital.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Glasgow Garden Club had 32 members, but membership fell to 16 gardeners and has not yet recovered.
“Due to health issues, some members felt uncomfortable coming back to meetings,” Eaton said.
Although there aren’t as many members as there once were, there is a diverse group.
Member Melba Richardson has been a member for 50 years.
“She was honored at the state Garden Club meeting,” Eaton said.

Linda Craiger joined the club in 2006.
“I wanted to learn to grow flowers in my own garden and felt the club and members could help with that,” Craiger said. She learned about the Glasgow Garden Club from her friend Georgene Shank, who invited her to attend a meeting.
Jeff Strong joined the club four years ago when he moved to Barren County from Colorado.
“I thought the garden club would be a good way to get to know people in the community and to learn to grow trees and flowers in this area,” Strong said.
Glasgow Garden Club Meetings are at 10 a.m. every fourth Wednesday at Lera B Mitchell Clubhouse. They are open to the public.
