Emma Bunch
PRESS RELEASE
Emma Bunch, a Harvard-bound senior at Glasgow High School, was selected as one of the top 300 teen scientists in the United States as part of the Regeneron Science Talent Search, according to a press release from the Society for Science. Each of the 300 students will be awarded $2,000, and their respective schools will receive $2,000 as well.
The talent search “recognizes and empowers our nation’s most promising young scientists who are generating innovative solutions to solve significant global challenges through rigorous research and discoveries,” the press release states, adding that the Top 40 finalists will be announced on Jan. 24, and that these 40 students will receive $25,000 each.
Bunch told the Scottie Channel that she was very excited to hear this announcement.
“Honestly, I was really shocked,” Bunch said. “I know that a lot of really incredible people applied, with a lot of really amazing projects from all these high schools across the country.
“So I was just super excited and honored that I could be a part of that.”
Bunch said she first heard about this competition in December 2021, while she was working on a research project with Alexander Bick from Vanderbilt University.
“I spent about five to six months virtually meeting with Dr. Bick,” Bunch said, adding that last July she spent two weeks at Vanderbilt for the National Institutes of Health All of Us Research Program. The project Bunch submitted for the competition analyzes data from this program.
Bunch said her rigorous science, math and computer science classes she took at GHS really helped her develop the skills she needs to become a physician-scientist. She was recently accepted into Harvard University, where she plans to pursue a career in this field and help advance precision medicine.
