The defense attorney for James Edward Campbell, 46, entered a plea of not guilty on his client’s behalf to charges of murder and two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment in Barren District Court on Monday afternoon.
Campbell is accused of fatally shooting Roger L. Noland of Scottsville on Friday evening at Campbell’s residence along North Race Street in Glasgow.
His attorney, Johnny Bell, requested a preliminary hearing rather than having the case sent directly to a grand jury; the hearing is set for 1 p.m. Feb. 20. Campbell remained lodged at that Barren County Detention Center in lieu of $500,000 bond.
According to the arrest citation, Glasgow Police Department units responded to a report of an adult male subject being shot. Upon arrival, they made contact with Noland, an adult female witness, a juvenile male witness and Campbell.
Noland was transported via Barren-Metcalfe Emergency Medical Services to T.J. Samson Community Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
The citation, completed by Capt. Justin Kirkpatrick, states that, while being interviewed by police, Campbell said that earlier that day, he and Noland had “engaged in a disagreement that continued going back and forth via messages by phone.”
Noland and the female witness arrived at Campbell’s address, and a verbal altercation began which led to his discharging a firearm from which a shot struck Noland.
“During the course of the investigation, it was determined that above subject acted with intent to cause the death of the victim,” the citation narrative continues. “While committing this offense, above subject wantonly engaged in conduct which created a substantial danger of death or serious physical injury to the two other persons on scene.”
The citation states the violation time was 6:51 p.m. Friday.
