A new pretrial conference has been set for a murder case that is nearing trial as attorneys continue discussions of whether a plea agreement can be reached.
Inell Crayton is charged with murder in relation to the death of Ke’Shawn Sarver, 22, at Sarver’s home in Cave City in late December 2018. The defendant appeared for a pretrial conference in Barren Circuit Court on Monday morning via Zoom from the Barren County Detention Center, where he has remained lodged in lieu of a $1 million cash bond.
The trial is scheduled for mid-May.
At a February pretrial conference, Crayton’s defense attorney, Lee Davis, had said he still had hope that he and his client could arrive at a plea agreement that would be satisfactory them and to Commonwealth’s Attorney John Gardner, who is prosecuting the case.
On Monday, Davis said the discussions regarding an agreement are ongoing, and he requested another pretrial conference, which was set for 10 a.m. April 17.
Crayton had two co-defendants, with Devonja Sweat, now 26, originally facing a murder charge that was later dropped, among others. Ultimately, Sweat pleaded guilty to first-degree burglary and tampering with physical evidence and was sentenced to approximately 13 years; he’s required to serve 85 percent of that before being eligible for parole.
Kayla Anderson, also now 26, still faces the same original charge of tampering with physical evidence, but her case has been pending until Crayton’s is resolved. She’s been out of jail on a $50,000 surety bond since Feb. 13, 2019.
