GLASGOW NEWS 1
Residents across Barren County have opportunities beginning Saturday and continuing through next week to get rid of excess items as they do – or prepare to do – their spring cleaning.
On Saturday, the City of Glasgow offers a free shredding service for its residents. The service is not intended to be for businesses. The event is from 9 a.m. to noon at the Glasgow Department of Public Works parking lot along the 400 block of West Front Street, with assistance available for unloading.
Beginning Monday, Glasgow will pick up large items and other extra items along with other trash; Barren County Office of Solid Waste is coordinating the placement of dumpsters at one or two locations around the county each day; and Cave City will have at least one dumpster available all week for its residents’ use – all providing savings to residents in comparison to dropping off these items at the landfill, where a fee is typically charged, and providing a cleaner environment in that it offers an alternative to illegal dumping at unauthorized locations.
Details have been announced at multiple local government meetings and elsewhere and posted on social media accounts, and they are also listed below.
These services have traditionally been provided in March each year in conjunction with Commonwealth Cleanup Week.
Glasgow residents
Small items must be bagged or boxed; small loose items will not be picked up. Those bagged and/or boxed items along with large items should be placed at curbside by 7 a.m. on the same day the residents’ normal trash pickup occurs.
Tree and shrub trimmings must be no more than 3 feet long and must be tied in a bundle.
Items must not be placed next to or under trees or utility poles, on trailers or against mailboxes; if they are, they will not be picked up.
Unacceptable items for pickup next week are appliances, automobile batteries and other automobile parts, asbestos, liquids, pesticides, large tree limbs and whole trees, construction materials and tires. Appliances are accepted all year at the Glasgow Regional Landfill at no charge, but all coolants, including Freon must be removed before they are taken there.
Questions should be directed to the Department of Public Works at 270-651-5977.
Cave City residents
The City of Cave City plans to have at least one dumpster placed at or near the fire department there, 204 N. First St., Monday through Saturday, April 1. Unacceptable items are tires, paint, oil, batteries, pesticides or other hazardous chemicals. This is in addition to the one the county has scheduled for Tuesday.*
Other Barren County residents
Dumpsters are to be available next week at the locations – mostly volunteer fire department stations – from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in accordance with the schedule below. The county asks that residents bring help as needed to unload items into the provided dumpsters, but county employees are scheduled to be present with trucks and other equipment available to assist with lifting particularly large and/or heavy items.
All smaller items must be bagged or boxed.
Appliances with coolants removed, mattresses/box springs and furniture such as couches, recliners and dressers will be accepted. Unacceptable items are tires, batteries, liquids, paint, oil and pesticides.
