If you are looking for a bit of the beach vibe in the heart of Glasgow, look no further than Pelican’s Snoball on Happy Valley Road. The business has not only added some color and pizazz to a main thoroughfare, it has fulfilled a dream for school teacher Steve Albert.
“I played professional baseball for a very brief time. Then I went into coaching and teaching, but I always thought I’d like to own a small business,” Steve said.
However, what sort of business was unclear. Then six years ago Steve and his wife Melissa welcomed their son Grayson into the world.
“We first saw a Pelican’s Snoball at Gulf Shores on vacation. Grayson loved the rainbow snoball,” Steve said. Later, he saw the franchise popping up around the region, including near his place of employment in Bowling Green, Warren Central, as well as Franklin and Owensboro, Kentucky, and Portland and Whitehouse, Tennessee.
Steve fancied the business because of its fun, family friendly nature and low up front costs.
“Grayson definitely inspired it. Me and my wife also liked that it was not an extremely expensive business to start up,” Steve said.
The Alberts live near the county lines that join Barren, Allen and Warren and looked in all of the communities for an ideal location. They found the perfect spot on Happy Valley.
“We did our research. It is the second most traveled street in town. I also like refurbishing something,” he said.

A father and daughter from Glasgow peruse the menu to make the perfect selection.
Most recently the location that is now adorned in bright pink and blue, was a used car lot. In the 1960s it was a gas station.
In addition to a remodel and refurbishment of the old station, the Alberts have added Pelican’s Snoballs signature outdoor seating, games for the kids, and festive beach inspired music. There is also a huge chair that all the children and some grownups scramble to sit in when they visit.
“The sign says over 100 flavors. We actually have over 120 flavors because I do things for special occasions,” he said.
He and his staff will be created a specialty snoball for Cinco De Mayo.
Steve is also proud of the quality of service they’ve been able to offer Glasgow since they opened.
“Everything we do is in house. We create our own ice blocks and we mix all of our own syrups,” he said.
As they expand and take root, Steve plans to add more outdoor lighting and playground equipment for family fun for summer nights.

The fun activities at Pelican’s includes outdoor turf for sports, corn hole, sidewalk chalk and building blocks.
“The motivation for this was to have fun on the job, and to put some smiles on kids’ faces and we are doing that,” Steve said.
