Last week, Glasgow’s downtown welcomed a sweet new stop for ice cream, coffees and so much more.

The Glasgow City Creamery, a charming seven-day-a week establishment on the south side of the square, is more than just a cool new place for treats.  It’s a family owned business with a unique story, that begins with the Hubbell family.

Interestingly, the connection between the Hubbell family and Glasgow begins nearly three decades ago.

“As a kid we would always vacation at Dale Hollow Lake and visit my Dad’s friends in Glasgow, so I was always familiar with this area.  My family moved here in the 90s as my father transferred to the Corvette plant from Indiana. The second I graduated high school in Indiana, Glasgow became home to our family and from that point on, we never looked back,” said Andrew Hubbell, who owns the business with his wife Jenny.

Andrew and Jenny Hubbell are the owners/operators and inspired founders of the Glasgow City Creamery, located at 112 S. Public Square in Glasgow.

As an adult, Andrew traveled, for work, doing heavy civil construction. It took him lots of places across the U.S.

“I had the opportunity to travel several states throughout 20 or more years,” Andrew said.  But Glasgow and Barren County, always held a special place in his heart.  He would often visit family in the region, and even though he met his Canadian born wife, Jenny, in the Dakotas, he married her in Kentucky, on his father’s farm in the hamlet of Eighty-Eight.

In 2020, with their focus turning to family, they moved to Barren County.

At that juncture in life, Andrew’s work shifted from oil fields to power plants. The Hubbell family questioned their decision about Glasgow, when opportunities in Florida and Georgia arose, but decided to stay the course of keeping Glasgow their home, regardless of where the work was.

“My family loves the people and the history here. Traveling over the states, you really appreciate the areas of the country that stay true to their core, and we feel that’s what this area has to offer,” he said.

Through a series of twists and turns, a downtown space became available, and, firmly rooted in the Glasgow community, the Hubbell family decided they wanted to find a way to give something back to a place that felt like home.

“Glasgow needed something downtown that would help bring life back into the community.  Neither my wife or I grew up thinking we were one day going to open an ice cream shop, but here we are,” Andrew laughed.

In many ways, it’s a perfect fit for the entire family. Andrew and Jenny ‘s daughter, Jazzy, spent time in the Northwest as a barista, and although she had been working as an excavator driver for her father, she decided to invest her time in the new family business.

“My daughter never thought she would leave the seat of an excavator in Georgia and come back to being a barista, but here she is.  This is a family business that all five of our kids participate in. We didn’t want to do a corporate franchise, we wanted this to be a family business that everyone around here can relate to,” Andrew said.

They’ve gone to great lengths to create quality products that will appeal to a diverse range of customers, and they’ve also gone to great lengths to create a cozy, modern yet warm atmosphere for the people who stop in.

“Our vibe is simple and that’s judgement free positivity!  We want this to be a place where no matter what’s going on in the world around us or even in your own world, it stops when you walk through the doors,” Andrew said.

The business also has another function, as the Glasgow City Creamery is the platform for a product developed by the Hubbells called the Zinger.

“Our Zinger drink is something completely different. We have some big plans for it and when the time is right, we will announce it to the world,” he said.

In the meantime, you can sample a Zinger, signature coffee, or parlor-style ice cream at the Glasgow City Creamery.
