Red Cross Elementary students returned to Glasgow earlier this week after winning several awards at the National Beta Convention.
According to Shana Vincent, one of the Red Cross Beta sponsors, 10 students made the trek to Louisville to compete against 16 states represented at the convention.
Annalee Hoggard and Lane Smith were chosen as Premier Performers for the convention, meaning they performed on stage in front of the whole assembly.
Cash Miller, a Red Cross student, is the outgoing National Beta president. Joe Harper, a Highland Elementary student, is taking his place as the next president. Vincent said it was a big deal for Kentucky to have such a leadership position.
“That’s great for Kentucky having those Kentucky leaders instead of another state,” Vincent said. “That’s pretty incredible.”
Other awards include: Aubrey Blythe, who was second in sculpture, and Sydney Pedigo who was ninth in painting.
Creed Collier, Brentley Coulter, Ross Harlow and Parker Nunn received tenth place in Elementary Engineering. A great achievement, Vincent said, since roughly 50 other teams competed in the category.
Jaxson Gregory, Cash Miller, Jaxson Pierce and Jaquavion Lewis was ninth in Junior Engineering, the middle grades category of the competition.
Vincent said even without the awards, she is “extremely proud” of all the students who competed at such a high level.
“Regardless of getting awards I’m very proud of all of our Beta students just because they are such good leaders,” Vincent said. “We’re proud of them regardless of the win [but] we’re super proud of them, tenth in the nation is a pretty big deal.”
