Glasgow High School was recently awarded the National Beta School of Merit Award for its continuing “commitment to academic excellence” and offering Beta at all grade levels.
Blair Abner, one of the cosponsors of GHS Beta, said its a recognition the school has received before but it is still a great accomplishment.
“It means we’re doing a great job at providing our students opportunities to serve their community in various ways,” Abner said. “We want to keep on doing that.”
According to National Beta, a “school will achieve National Beta School of Merit status by increasing student involvement in all eligible grades on the schools’ campus.”
Joey Norman, principal at GHS, shared Abner’s happiness at getting the recognition.
“Anytime you can get honored as a School of Merit, especially on the national level, that’s a big deal,” Norman said.
According to Norman, Glasgow’s high achievement at extracurriculars, such as Beta, was one factor that helped him in deciding to take his current position. He took over as GHS principal on July 1.
“Glasgow has had a long history of performing at a high level within Beta,” Norman said. “That was one thing that was definitely on my radar whenever I applied for this job was the success they’ve had in participating within Beta and winning multiple state and national awards.”
Glasgow High School joins the 3,500 other schools from across the United States that have applied and received the award. According to National Beta, the award comes with a “congratulatory letter,” a digital badge, a press release and a National School of Merit decal that can be displayed in the school.
“It’s something we’re proud of,” Norman said. “Anytime that our students are able to achieve at a high level…, that’s huge and at Glasgow we’re always trying to set the bar high and raise expectations for all of our kids. Being able to utilize this as another tool to encourage student involvement, and community involvement, is always a bonus for us.”
Abner said, next year she was aiming for the National Beta School of Distinction Award, which is characterized by a 10 percent increase in membership numbers since last school year.
Regardless, Abner and Norman agreed that this award was great accomplishment.
