Kentucky’s Interstate-65 has ranked historically as one of the most dangerous interstates in the United States. In a study evaluating America’s interstates in years 2004-2008, I-65 came in at number 37 on a list of the 100 most dangerous interstates. This puts a lot of stress on emergency services close to the interstate.
When accidents occur on I-65, Park City Fire Department is often the first on the scene due to the city’s proximity. In situations where seconds can mean the difference between life and death, having a reliable source of transportation is essential. PCFD officials began lobbying for assistance to upgrade its emergency service equipment years ago, and thanks to the efforts of the city, a state grant was awarded for just that.
The new truck started servicing the area in June after being outfitted with more space to accommodate all the equipment firefighters need.
“We’re very fortunate to have a vehicle like this,” said Gary Martin, Assistant Chief at PCFD.
Opening the bed of the truck, Martin showed off the interior where some equipment is kept like the city’s new hydraulic rescue device more commonly known as the “jaws of life.” He also brought attention to a side compartment that carries medical equipment and holds air bags, which are used to upright overturned vehicles or create space to extract a person who is pinned under a vehicle.
Amanda Laird, PCFD secretary, was thrilled with the new vehicle as well.
“When the fire department responds, it’s because someone really needs help, and to be able to have a truck that you can count on, that can get us there in the safest and quickest way means so much to us,” she said.
Laird has worked with department since March. She is also the city’s alcohol beverage control administrator.
“Park City residents, and those traveling on the interstate can rest assured they are in great hands here,” she said.
