Bids to do land survey work at American Legion Park were opened Friday by city officials and notification went out that day to the winning bidder, said Eddie Furlong, the parks and recreation director for Glasgow.
This update was part of Furlong’s report to the Glasgow Common Council Planning and Development Committee, commonly known as the Parks and Recreation Committee, at its regular meeting Monday.
A proposed schematic design for a revamp of the park has been completed by Brandstetter Carroll, but having the detailed land survey done will better inform as to whether the desired elements will fit well where they are proposed, he said.
With regard to constructing a new Richardson Stadium at Gorin Park to replace the facility that burned down last summer, Furlong said a tentative Phase 1 design has been submitted by the project architect, but moving forward hinges on what agreement can – or cannot – be reached between city officials and the primary user of the baseball field, Glasgow Independent Schools, regarding its costs.
Furlong said a proposed agreement has been sent by the mayor and city attorney to GIS Superintendent Chad Muhlenkamp and the school system’s attorney.
Furlong’s report also included the following, some of which prompted discussion but no action items were included that required a vote.
— “Juvenile” vandalism has been occurring at the newly constructed bathrooms at Gorin Park;
— Sign-ups are underway for fall soccer and volleyball; and
— Bids are to be opened later this week for construction of new bathrooms at Beaver Creek Park.
The committee members – Chasity Lowery, Terry Bunnell, Freddie Norris and Patrick Gaunce – also revisited and batted around some potential locations for tennis courts, as it was decided previously they would not fit with the redesign of American Legion Park.
Bunnell, an avid tennis player, said this is something they’ll all need to keep thinking about and considering.
At the conclusion of the meeting, some of the members strolled around the perimeter of the back parking lot– where a football field once was — of the property behind the Parks and Recreation Department building along Liberty Street. The area has been suggested as a possible location for tennis courts, but even if the desired number of six could go there, concerns about the limited entry and exit point could be a barrier.
