Caverna Independent Schools will finalize its choice for the new Caverna Elementary School principal within the next few weeks, Amanda Abell, superintendent of the district said.

The vacancy is the result of Tyler Richardson, currently listed as the elementary school principal on Caverna’s website, getting promoted to district-wide director of student services. According to Abell they interviewed Richardson on July 31 and offered him the position the following day. She said he’ll be able to begin in this new position in this current school year, scheduled to begin August 22.

“He’s been promoted to the district level which opened up a principal position,” Abell said

She said she is also putting together an advisory committee to seek input from various groups of people who will be affected by the decision.

“The superintendent can hire a principal but I wanted to get input from lots of people,” Abell said.

The committee will consist of 6-7 people, with the possibility of an eighth, Abell said, who are faculty and staff at the elementary school as well as parents.

In addition to the advisory committee, the Caverna Independent School District also released a survey online seeking community input on the qualities and characteristics they want displayed in a principal. The survey consists of three questions asking for three qualities and characteristics “necessary for a principal to be successful at Caverna Elementary School” and asks for the top three important issues they believe are facing the school that “the principal must be ready to deal with.”

“We wanted to know what qualities our community and our families want to see in the new principal that we hire and we want to see what our staff…want to see in a principal,” Abell said “I think it’s very important to get that type of input from your stakeholders and your partners.”

“By sending the survey it gives people in the community a voice,” Abell added.

Abell said she is hoping to finalize the decision by next week with a formal announcement to follow afterwards.
