Kentucky Living, an online and magazine publication announced its winners of its 14th annual Best in Kentucky awards on Aug. 16.
The award show, sponsored by Hart County Tourism, highlights the best in the 30 categories featured in the competition from the best water tourism location, the best coffee shop to the best road trip destination. The 30 categories are divided into four groups: Eats and Drinks, Outdoor, Destinations and People and Personalities.
Kellie McKay, host of one of Nash 103.7’s morning shows, won in the local radio host category, beating out Cale Tharp of WLCB and Lucas Ross of WOKH.
McKay said she is honored to have received the nomination and the award, something, she said, she had never won in her roughly 24 years as on the radio.
“I am very humbled and honored that out of all the radio personalities in the state of Kentucky I am No. 1,” McKay said. “That just makes me feel so excited. I am honored and humbled by this recognition, those are probably the best two words to describe it.”
McKay said her love of radio began when she was a little girl listening to the music and the DJs just “waiting for her favorite song to come on.” As she grew older that love did not diminish, but grew stronger as she was given the opportunity, through Junior Achievement, to go to her local station every Monday night for the duration of her high school career.
After high school she discovered college was not her path and “took a few jobs” before being approach by Commonwealth Broadcasting. That started her extensive radio career. She said this award, and her whole career, would not have been possible without the committed listeners that keep her on the air.
“It’s not just for me, but for the community, too,” McKay said. “I could not do what I do for the community without their support plus the support of my family and friends. It makes it all worthwhile.”
McKay will be recognized Thursday, Aug. 17, in Louisville, along with the other winners.
