The Freedom Warriors Community Veterans Organization, headed by Ernie Wagoner, held a brief service by candle light commemorating those who died in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 at the 9/11 memorial in front of the Glasgow Fire Department at 7 p.m.
Numerous notable people were in attendance at the small group gathered around the memorial including Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd, Barren County County Clerk Helena Birdwell and State Rep. Steve Riley.
The service began with Wagoner leading the group in prayer as the flag beside the monument stood at half-staff. Members of the Freedom Warriors passed around wax candles as Barbara Pendleton lead the group in “Amazing Grace,” “God Bless America” and “My Country Tis of Thee.”
William Rock, GFD’s fire chief, said many people did not purposely forget 9/11, but were born after the event and did not have their own personal stories of that day like so many that “could tell you exactly what they were doing on that day.” He challenged all those present to tell their stories so “people wouldn’t forget.”
Riley likewise echoed Rock’s remarks retelling two stories he read today of some of the victims of the attacks saying those personal stories will “rip your heart out.”
