The Student Alumni Ambassadors of Western Kentucky University recently welcomed 19 new members, whittled down from the 164 initial applicants, into the organization. This brings the total membership up to 40 for fall 2023.  This batch of new recruits features young adults from numerous places in Tennessee and many towns in Kentucky including Bowling Green, Lexington and Owensboro.

Among the 19 adults is Glasgow High School alumni Mikiya Fogle. She is now a sophomore at WKU double majoring in Legal Studies and finance and a student in the Mahurin Honors College.

“The Student Alumni Ambassadors are a fantastic group here at WKU, and I’m thrilled to be one of the newest members,” Fogle said. “I think one of the most exciting things about being a new member is being able to contribute to the community. Being part of the program means I get to connect with alumni, students and the community in a meaningful way.”

Fogle said her desire to join the ambassadors came from a desire to get more involved on campus and because her parents are alumni of Western as well. Her father, Fogle said, is very active at WKU and was on the alumni association board, which first introduced her to the Student Alumni Ambassadors. She said she “hopes to follow in her father’s footsteps” by giving back to the university in some form or another even after she graduates.

According to the SSA website, to get accepted as an ambassador a person has to have at least a 3.0 GPA, a full-time student, complete 12 event hours each semester and have completed three monthly hours at the Martens Alumni Center.

According to Zach Marcum, assistant director of philanthropy and alumni engagement, the Student Ambassadors “serve as the primary bridge” between alumni and WKU students through the WKU Alumni Association.

“Our work revolves around education, engagement, and making a tangible impact, Fogle said. “We organize events, workshops, and activities that aim to foster a strong sense of community and tradition among students and alumni. By doing so, we help students build valuable networks, gain insights from alumni experiences, and prepare for life after graduation.”

She said she hopes to continue to get involved on campus with her sights set on the WKU Spirit Masters next.
