The Caverna Board of Education tested its capacity as family and friends filled the meeting room to support students and educators being celebrated before the official meeting began.

In total seven educators were recognized for going above and beyond with their students. “It’s all about communicating with my students on their level,” said Marla England, visual and performing art teacher for each of Caverna’s schools. “Art isn’t about being perfect for others, it’s about making something that’s perfect to you.”

The meeting then shifted to two students who attended the Governor’s Scholars program, telling the crowd about their time spent furthering their education. The juniors, Jamison Pippin and Sequoria Copass, explained how the program effected their career paths.

As the recognitions came to a close the meeting began in earnest with the superintendent’s report. Abell did not have much to talk about as the schools various projects have been progressing as expected, with most discussion coming from the construction of restrooms near the high school softball field. Other updates were also discussed such as the the culinary remodel.

According to Tyler Richardson, director of student services, this remodel aims on creating a “commercial style kitchen” for the students taking home economics to utilize.

The next item was devoted to the approval by the board members for the 2023-24 tax rate and the approval of the working budget. The board agreed unanimously to decrease the rate with Abell pointing out that revenue would more than make up for the marginal decrease.

With no other discussion the meeting adjourned after just under an hour with attendees chatting with board members and each other, happy to see Caverna reward the work ethic of students and teachers alike.
