Nationally recognized children’s book author Julia Cook is coming to the Glasgow Independent School district today, Sept. 19, to talk to the children and their parents about mental health.
Cook is an award winning children’s book author and parenting expert whose books have been mentioned in such notable publications as The New Yorker, The Huffington Post, Parent’s Magazine and been featured on numerous news programs like CNN.
Cook was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she developed a love for teaching from her first job as a ski instructor. She went on to a master’s in Elementary School Counseling at Wayne State University eventually serving as a professional school counselor. After using children’s books to enhance her own classroom experiences she transition to becoming an author, herself, selling over 3 million books and visiting over 3,000 schools since 2006.
“Julia wants all children to have the ability to become life-long problem solvers,” Cook’s website states. “Her books serve as a vehicle to convey “great people skills” into the minds of all who read them.”
Today, Sept. 19, Cook is traveling from her home — in Fremont, Nebraska — to spend the whole day traveling through Glasgow’s school district — mainly the elementary schools — to present on a variety of mental health areas. According to her website, her popular presentation topics include “Celebrating and Appreciating Differences, Improving Relationships with Others, Controlling Impulsive Behavior, Dealing with Anxiety & Stress, Coping with Depression, Handling Peer Pressure, Listening & Following Instructions.”
Tammy Lindsey, South Green’s FRC, and Gretchen Williams, Highland Elementary’s FRC, said Cook would begin her tour at Highland Elementary before heading over to South Green Elementary. Cook will also go to Glasgow High School to participate in the district-wide event of the “Big Blue Preview.”
This event is a “social and emotional learning night” that’s open to the children and their parents, Lindsey said, but will also focus all a person’s “all around health” with cardio drumming, creating a healthy snack and creating “calming jars.” Lindsey said Cook will handle the more mental health topics and will read her book “The Judgmental Flower” before talking to the parents alone while the kids make their crafts.
The event is at GHS from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Lindsey said it will be a great time and encourages all those who can to attend. There will also be food provided as the administration will be making hotdogs, Williams said.
