The Glasgow Independent School Board of Education members met on Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the library of Glasgow Middle School for their monthly meeting. The agenda covered a wide range of topics including new stipends for GMS baseball coaches, bus purchases, Kentucky funds and multiple items related to the new South Green Elementary school.
The meeting, which was called to order by chairperson Amelia Kiser once all four other board members were present, began with the recognition of GMS teacher Lauren Houk who, Principal Justin Stinson said, “always goes above and beyond” and who is always “someone to emulate.”
After Regina Murphy, gifted and talented supervisor, supervisor of federal programs and instructional support initiative, handed her the glass award and pictures were taken, the board recognized members of Alliance Corporation, the company responsible for the construction of the new school, for an update on the SGE project.
The presentation began by Alliance Corporation members presenting the board with pictures of the new school. All-in-all, they said the construction was going well and they didn’t have any major setbacks with Chad Muhlenkamp, superintendent of the district, saying the furniture was set to be delivered the middle of next week.
“It’s coming along,” Muhlenkamp said. “It’s going…we’re getting into those final stages.”
There was also eight change orders on the Oct. 16 agenda. Three of the orders involved the HVAC unit on the existing building while the others dealt with the new SGE, like soffit panels, installing an outlet for a dryer and a debit caused by using less concrete than previously thought.
Once that was over, and no questions were raised, the members turned their attention to Director of Instruction Tara Martin and her report concerning Local Area Vocational Education Center funds. According to Martin these are funds from the commonwealth of Kentucky that the district received last year as well. She said the LAVEC funds have stipulations that require them to use it on CTE classes at the high school. This year’s allotment is roughly $183,000, though she also said the amount will be finalized in mid-January, so they could get more.
“It basically gives us an opportunity to purchase items that the teachers otherwise wouldn’t have the means to purchase,” Martin said.
These LAVEC funds also relates to a Memorandum of Agreement and a budget also listed on the agenda under the student services portion. Martin said the LAVEC budget was essentially a “wishlist” of items the CTE teachers would like to have in their classrooms.
The operation portion of the agenda, which included seven items, was approved unanimously without discussion. This section included approval of payment of claims, the superintendent’s time sheet and trips and fundraisers.
Toward the end of the roughly 30 minute meeting, Muhlenkamp discussed and asked the board to approve new Glasgow High School extracurricular guidelines, which states that non-high school students would need to be accompanied by an adult, and new stipends for the GMS baseball coaches in an effort to make them more equal with other school sports.
Lastly, Muhlenkamp asked the board to approve a new school bus purchase. Muhlenkamp said they were still waiting for a bus they ordered last year to arrive.
The next board of education meeting is scheduled for Nov. 13.
