Caleb Hudson, 19, of Glasgow has a new belt. He won it at the “Back in the ‘Boro” amateur boxing competition in Owensboro on Saturday, Oct. 14.
Hudson’s journey began in 2021 when he joined Ringside Elite Boxing.
“When he first started, he was a very quiet kid, he was home schooled at the time, and it took two maybe three months before he opened up and I’m his coach,” said Dalton Newton, owner of the boxing gym. “He was like come in, do what he was told, didn’t ask a lot of questions, he would just do it.”
As his training continued, so did Hudson’s desire to compete grow.
“A lot of times with amateur fights you’ll see focus on melee and hard shots,” Newton said. “I want my boxers to focus on strategy, and Caleb did everything like he was supposed to.”
Newton’s tutelage seemed to pay off with Newton explaining to Hudson to not be distracted by the crowd and the loud, jarring noises. Above all, he said “be you and be true.”
Hudson’s fight was a unique one as his opponent was not only a first-time competitor himself, but was one that Hudson had sparred with in training.
“I think it helped that I knew the guy I was fighting from training camps,” Hudson said. “I don’t think it really gave me an edge, since he knew how I fought to, but it being both of our first times made me feel a little better.”
The pair talked about how no love is lost in matches like Hudson’s with Newton saying, “It’s all love in boxing, it’s nothing personal. You’re a fighter and so are we, that’s what we go through.”
“There’s really no secret to winning, just hard work and preparation,” said Hudson. With the belt in hand, Hudson is now taking several weeks off to recover and prepare for his next fight.
Newton said that they now have their eyes on amateur matches in Tennessee with no plans of slowing down.
