Family members pinned badges and collar pins on three of the Glasgow Fire Department’s five newly academy-graduated members Monday during the regular meeting of the Glasgow Common Council.
Those three were Taylor Herron, Ethan Mast and Anderson Young.
The other two new firefighters – Tristen Carter and Patchez Childers – couldn’t be present for different reasons.
“We’re just so excited to see these young professionals come on board,” Mayor Henry Royse said.
GFD Chief William Rock II said this is the second group the city has sent through the Fire Academy of Kentucky, a 13-week course on a campus just outside Greenville, and they completed their work Nov. 17 with more than 400 hours of instruction and multiple certifications.
Aside from recognizing these new personnel, the council had little business on which to vote.
With all council members present in person or, in Councilman Patrick Gaunce’s case, via Zoom, the votes were unanimous to approve the following:
– second reading of an ordinance to officially close “Fifth Street,” which was part of a subdivision plan designated as a public way but was never developed as an actual street;
– a municipal order reappointing Melba Richardson to the Glasgow Renaissance Steering Committee for another two-year term, after the mayor announced that the other person he intended to reappoint, Peggy Bates, had advised him she couldn’t serve for a new term; and
– a resolution authorizing the city to dispose of a 2008 Chevrolet Impala the Glasgow Police Department had designated as surplus property.
Councilman Terry Bunnell, who chairs the council’s strategic planning committee, announced that 25 new banners have been printed with the city’s new logo and slogan, which includes the city and state name, a bar of the official Glasgow tartan and the words “Heritage with Opportunity” that will be placed in the downtown area and the main corridors off the Glasgow Public Square.
With the assistance of Councilwoman Marna Kirk, one of the banners, with a background of blue, was unfurled for display; Bunnell said the banners will be in five colors. The cost of the banners was provided by leftover donations to the Glasgow-Barren County Community Foundation that had been earmarked for the branding project, and the committee wanted to put that to good use.
He said five will be hung Wednesday and others are to come once the Christmas decorations come down.
The next regular council meeting begins at 6 p.m. Dec. 11 in Council Chambers on Floor 2 of Glasgow City Hall, 126 E. Public Square.
