In less than a week, Glaswegians and Barren County residents alike will line the roadsides, huddled in blankets or in the comfort of their heated cars, to watch the annual Glasgow Christmas parade.
This year’s Christmas parade is scheduled to take place this Saturday, Dec. 2, at 6 p.m. In years prior the Christmas parade had themes of “Aloha Christmas” and “Peace on Earth that dictated the decor of the various floats. On Aug. 25 Barren Inc. announced that this year’s parade theme is “Hometown Christmas” that aims “to bring a sense of nostalgia, community spirit, a celebration of togetherness, and tradition to the festivities this year.”
“It’s very general but that’s on purpose, we want to see what Hometown Christmas looks like for you,” Erin Hiles, director of programs and events at Barren Inc., said.
The application to enter a float into the parade opened on Oct. 1 and quite quickly local businesses, families and public officials joined the lineup. According to information provided by Hiles, there are a total of 179 floats in the lineup including the Barren County JROTC and marching band, several city and county officials, Boy Scout troops 586 and 661, numerous small businesses and Santa Claus bringing up the rear.
“We are the largest nighttime parade anywhere in the state of Kentucky,” Hiles said.
The parade will follow the traditional route of beginning at Glasgow High School going down Columbia Avenue around the Square and ending at the Glasgow Baptist Church.
April Russell, Glasgow city administrator, said they would begin closing street around 5:30 p.m. and Hiles encourages people to get to their destination before that time.
Floats will begin lining up at 1 p.m., Russell said, with judging to commence around 4 p.m.
