623rd members to deploy; community asked to line streets Sunday morning

The local National Guard unit is deploying to Southwest Asia, according to information from the Kentucky Army National Guard director of public affairs.

“300 Soldiers from the 1-623rd FA will deploy to support the U.S. Army Central Command’s Operation Spartan Shield throughout Southwest Asia where they will maintain and strengthen partnerships with regional allies through joint fire exercises and key leader engagements,” Lt. Col. Carla A. Raisler stated in an email.

Family, friends and public officials joined members of the field artillery unit at Glasgow High School on Saturday morning for a deployment ceremony. The deploying members of the unit will leave from the Glasgow National Guard Armory at 7 a.m. Sunday. The public is invited to line the route of departure to show support. They will leave from the armory, travel Cavalry Drive to L. Rogers Wells Blvd. and north to Happy Valley Road, then turn toward Cave City.

“Task Force Spartan is a unique, multi-component organization made up of active Army, National Guard, U.S Army Reserve units,” Raisler stated. “Since 2011, Operation Spartan Shield, Task Force Spartan has maintained U.S. military presence in Southwest Asia where they have been involved in a range of military activities aimed at promoting regional security and stability.”
