The local National Guard unit is deploying to Southwest Asia, according to information from the Kentucky Army National Guard director of public affairs.
“300 Soldiers from the 1-623rd FA will deploy to support the U.S. Army Central Command’s Operation Spartan Shield throughout Southwest Asia where they will maintain and strengthen partnerships with regional allies through joint fire exercises and key leader engagements,” Lt. Col. Carla A. Raisler stated in an email.
The deploying members of the unit will left from the National Guard Armory in Glasgow at 7 a.m. Sunday. Members of the public lined the route of departure to show support. Several Barren County volunteer fire fighter units provided traffic support. Also, Glasgow Police Department and Kentucky State Police vehicles provided an escort out of town.
“Task Force Spartan is a unique, multi-component organization made up of active Army, National Guard, U.S Army Reserve units,” Raisler stated. “Since 2011, Operation Spartan Shield, Task Force Spartan has maintained U.S. military presence in Southwest Asia where they have been involved in a range of military activities aimed at promoting regional security and stability.”
