Glasgow Common Council had little to do Monday for its last regular meeting of 2023, but all were present nonetheless.
Before the council members got into their one action item, Glasgow Police Department Chief Guy Howie had a presentation to make. To recognize the contributions two individuals – Gary Wilson and Cory Stephenson – made to the Faith in Blue picnic on Oct. 6, he had a drink cup and a plaque for each of them, but he could only present them to Wilson, because Stephenson had a sick child at home, he said.
He said the event took a lot of organizing and he named a few local businesses that had supported the effort, but these two “went over and above.”
“They took their day off of work – a whole day off of work – to came out and they cooked the entire day. They prepped the meal, used Fortus Technologies’ cooker, spent the whole day cooking and, on top of that, you know, cleaned up,” Howie said,
Wilson is the operations manager and Stephenson is the machine shop manager at Fortus in Glasgow.
“If it had not been for them, you’d have had Guy Howie flipping burgers, and he doesn’t do it that well,” the chief said. “These two gentlemen did an outstanding job.”
The one action item was consideration of a municipal order appointing Chappy Rice as a member of the Glasgow Renaissance Steering Committee for a two-year term, which was approved unanimously.
The council’s next regular meeting, as well as the next regular meeting of the council Public Safety Committee, would fall on Dec. 25, so Mayor Henry Royce announced that both of those are canceled due to the Christmas holiday, and City Hall is closed Dec. 25 and 26, as well as Jan. 1 for New Year’s Day.
That puts the next regular meeting at 6 p.m. Jan. 8 in Council Chambers on Floor 2 of Glasgow City Hall, 127 E. Public Square.
