South Green Elementary School music teacher Tambra Cambron has been putting on elaborate musical performances for 23 years. Amongst the favorite performances are “The Lion King,” “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” “Cinderella,” and “101 Dalmatians.”

This year another favorite emerged as students took the stage and shined in the limelight performing “Annie Jr.”

“It is the traditional story of orphan Annie, who has to endure the strictness of Mrs. Hannigan who runs the orphanage, just a little shorter than the original version,” said Cambrom.

Three of the production’s shining stars were Aubrey Pate, who payed Annie, Elijah Hopkins, who played Daddy Warbucks, and Jaliyah Ray, who played a very theatrically adorned popcorn vendor. The there fifth graders showed a great amount of talent and enthusiasm, and each loved being in Annie for different reasons.

Oh what a night! SGE fifth graders put on a humdinger of a performance in Annie.

“I like sharing my gift of singing,” Pate said.

“She does have a gift, she made two all state choirs this year,” Cambron added.

For Hopkins, who complained only of the discomfort of wearing a “bald wig” to portray his character, it is the comedy that is appealing.

“I enjoy putting a smile on people’s faces and making them laugh,” he said.

For Ray, a great deal of the joy of performing comes from the pageantry of it. “I like my costume and big, red wig.”

“I also liked working together, it hat was fun,” added Hopkins.

For Cambrom the joy is in the dedication and the perfecting of an art. As a 34-year educator who has made many career changes, the job of Music Teacher at SGE is what she always hoped for as a teacher.

“When I got here and became the music teacher, it is what I always dreamed of,” she said. It offered her a change to delve in and showcase what long-term commitment to a job can accomplish.

Pate, as Annie, and Hopkins, as Daddy Warbucks, captivated the audience.

“Very blessed to have been here in this way. So many of them can sing and dance and act, and these performances give them a chance to show off their abilities,” Cambron said.

As for the future, each of them plan to seek careers in the entertainment field.

“I like acting, and love to play my electric guitar with my brother,” Hopkins said.

Pate plans to grace the stages on Broadway as a classical actor/singer, and Ray wants to be on stage, too, as a hip hop and country singer.

Principal Josh Turner is proud of all the student performers and what Cambron offers the school.

“It offers an opportunity for students to explore talents and interests, and it also helps prepare kids for developing the life skills of preparation, hard work and team work,” Turner said.

Turner said it is also very enjoyable to see the student families enjoying the performances, and embracing one of the district’s strong points.

“Our district has always loved and embraced the arts, we will continue to do so moving forward,” Turner said.
