Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd is listed as one of 48 women recognized by The Kentucky Gazette as “2023 Notable Women in Kentucky Politics and Government.”

The special edition of the journal, printed in the fall of 2023, featured women from a diverse range of fields including other Kentucky counties, members of the Kentucky Supreme Court, public relation firms and nonprofits “that work closely with government agencies.”

Byrd, who was elected as judge-executive in November 2022, is listed along with the government officials, nonprofit workers and business leaders.

Laura Cullen Glasscock, editor and publisher of the journal, wrote in the note attached to the list that the individuals were picked by “its members and social media followers” who “emailed names and reasons why these women should be honored.”

Byrd said she does not know who nominated her and only became aware of her place on the list when the Gazette reached out to her asking for biographical information many months prior.

“It is an honor,” Byrd said. “It was great to get the recognition. I looked at the group of women that were nominated, I knew some of them, and it is an honor to be a member [of this group].”

The Gazette is widely considered the first newspaper printed in the U.S. west of the Allegheny Mountains with the goal of supporting Kentucky’s break from Virginia and is now a public affairs journal.

“It’s an honor to be nominated,” Byrd said. “It’s great for our county. A lot of people from the state are looking at Barren County and that’s what we want. We want Barren County to have positive recognition across the state.”
