For the past three years, River Lake Church of Glasgow searched the city to find the perfect spot to create a winter wonderland experience for the community.
“It took us awhile to find a place that fits the requirements,” said the church’s Kids Director Heather Harper.
In order to book All Year Sports Galaxy, the church needed to find a flat surface to set-up the ice rink. A few months before Christmas, Harper finally realized where the rink should go.
“It just hit me, the tennis courts are the best place,” said Harper.
After calling Glasgow Parks and Recreation to receive permission to use the tennis courts at Gorin Park, the church contacted All Year Sports Galaxy to secure a portable ice-skating rink Dec 18-20.
“This was the first time that we’ve ever partnered with them [Glasgow Parks and Recreation Department],” Harper said. “It went really well. They’ve been extremely accommodating. They sent out a team to help us get stuff ready.”
To set-up the ice rink, All Year Sports Galaxy laid down click and lock tiles that are made of an eco-friendly acrylic material. Then coated the tiles with an oil that allows skaters to glide across the synthetic ice.
This event is part of River Lake Church’s Christmas time initiative to “Let Hope In.” In addition to the ice rink, the church also partnered with first responders to surprise drivers with cash when they’re pulled over by the police.
“We do this every year, and it looks a little different each time,” Harper said. “One year we gave over 300 bicycles to kids. We always have one big event for the community and this year it’s the ice-skating rink.”
