The Glasgow Fire Department responded to a house fire at the intersection of S. Morgan and E. Washington streets just before noon on Thursday, Dec. 21.

According to April Dunbar, assistant director at the Barren-Metcalfe Communications Center, the dispatch center received a call regarding a fire at 110 S. Morgan St. at 11:44 a.m. and dispatched the fire department at 11:45 a.m. with GFD arriving on scene at 11:47 a.m. One Glasgow firefighter said there were at least seven apartments inside the two-story building. The press release provided by Fire Chief William Rock confirmed it was “a single-family dwelling that had been converted into a multifamily dwelling.”

“I can’t believe this happened just a few days before Christmas,” said Jeff Barnard, a resident at 110 S. Morgan St.

Barnard said he was sleeping at the time the fire started and woke up to the smell of smoke. He, and his son, rushed out of the residence without even grabbing a pair of shoes.

“We woke up and saw smoke above us,” Barnard said. “Woke up in a panic. Made sure it wasn’t around me then I checked my son to make sure it wasn’t around him. When we got out we realized the fire was in the room beside us.”

The press release stated the fire “appears to be electrical in nature.”

After roughly an hour-and-a-half at the scene, the fire department contained the fire and allowed residents to re-enter the premises to grab some of their belongings. Barnard went back into his apartment returning with a handful of shoes, while another resident climbed the singed stairs to retrieve her toothbrush and various other small possessions. The items were stuffed in her pocket and balled together in her arms.

Knowing that a lot of his apartment suffered water and smoke damage, Barnard said he had “no idea” where they would stay for the night

“I guarantee we’re not going to be staying there tonight,” Barnard said. “I’m just glad everybody got out [and that] they got out healthy; no smoke inhalation or anything like that.”

The press release stated the department was on scene for roughly three hours in total with no injuries reported or observed.

“No one was injured, however multiple families were displaced,” the release stated. “The property was turned back over to the homeowner.”
