Absolutely Sweet, a local bakery that offers specialized cakes, cookies, muffins and many sweet treats, is set to become the newest business to adorn the Glasgow Public Square with its vibrant storefront and sign.
Nedra Poore, owner and operator of the bakery who makes all the pastries herself, said she moved the business from its original location in Cave City — which Poore is from — to its new home at 111 Court House Square beside Commerce Plaza in order to be closer to family, though, she said, she will miss the connections she has made in Cave City.
“I want to be here,” Poore said. “This is where we live. I don’t have to travel back and forth and I feel like there’s opportunity here. It’s home, but at the same time I’m thankful for the people I met at [Cave City] and for those customers, I miss them so much already.”
“I’m thankful for the experience there but I’m ready to get started here,” Poore added.
She said it would have been nice to keep the Cave City location open, but couldn’t find qualified people who could bake and, just as importantly she said, decorate.
Poore and her husband said they purchased the building from Patrick Gaunce about eight months ago and started doing extensive work on the structure roughly two months after that time saying they essentially had to fix the building “from the ground up” in terms of flooring and electrical.
Gaunce said the couple are leasing to own the entirety of the Mitchell Terry Building — the building with the bookcase mural — that includes several units.
Poore said she is excited to be a part of the Square’s revitalization.
“That’s what you want,” Poore said. “You don’t want our town to be a bunch of old, abandoned buildings. So we’re going to try and rejuvenate it a unit at a time. I’m thankful we’re a part of that.”
Poore said what started out as a hobby has become a roughly 30 year venture that garnered her many friends, customers and connections both in Cave City and the surrounding areas.
Barren County County Clerk Helena Chase Birdwell said Poore is an “amazing person” who makes “excellent” treats.
“You know how you’ve always had hobbies and say ‘I can do this and be profitable at it’ it’s like that and I thought ‘why not? What do we have to lose?’” Poore said. “We tried it and it’s worked great. I’m thankful I did it.”
Currently, Poore is not sure of an opening day as holdups with the state associated with the holidays have caused delays, but she is hoping for a soft opening by the end of this week or during next week. Poore was “holding back” her excitement at the thought of opening so soon.
“I’m beyond excited,” Poore said. “It’s overwhelming the happiness that I have. I’m extremely happy.”
