What is a silent glow disco? Find out at Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library on Feb. 14.

The free event from 5 to 6 p.m. at the public library in Glasgow is the result of a survey sent out by Youth Services manager Kelly Bowles.

“I sent out a survey for ages third grade through sixth grade for both parents and children of that age range to fill out what they’re most interested in, and a silent disco was one of the programs that they were most interested in,” Bowles said.

During the black-light themed event, attendees will be encouraged to listen to their favorite music through headphones and dance around with their peers in the community meeting room.

“For those who may not like dancing, it’s a cool place to share music and see other friends who might like similar music or discover a new genre,” Bowles said.

Children will also be able to use glow in the dark chalk pens and munch on snacks while they jam out.

In addition to entertaining children, Bowles plans to set up an activity area for the parents of children who may not want them to stay in the room with them during the disco.

“For this age range, our unattended child policy states that parents don’t have to be in the exact same location as their child, but they do have to stay at the library. So, for the kids who don’t want their parents to be in the same room with them I’m going to set up a little station for parents with board games and crafts to keep them occupied while their children are dancing around,” Bowles said. “However, I will be there to chaperone.”

In looking forward, Bowles is unsure if this will be a repeat event. Each month she creates themed events based on things such as holidays, seasons, and special events. Though some events occur every month, Bowles is currently focusing on designing a new event based on the interests of those who participate in the surveys for the recently developed older elementary kids’ program.

“What my program attendees want is important to me,” she said.

Those interested in the silent disco are asked to register for the event by visiting the library’s website or stopping by in person.
