The Cave City Council met in the council chambers of city hall for its regularly scheduled meeting, but was unable to take action because three members were absent due to various health issues. Attorney Woodford “Woody” Gardner filled in for the council’s regular city attorney Bobby Richardson.
Though there weren’t enough members to have a quorum, three guests approached the stand.
Certified Public Accountant Steven Throneberry of Hensely and Throneberry CPAs reviewed an audit for the last fiscal year that ended July 30, 2023.
During his presentation, Throneberry directed the council’s attention to a statement of net position, a statement of activities, revenues and expenses for the sanitation fund, and the budget versus actual comparison.
“The total expenditures did come in $480,00.00 less than the intended budget, so again that’s a favorable number. You had planned for just over 3 million dollars in expenses, but the expenses were held to 2.6 million so then your excess of revenue had a positive variance of $237,000,” Throneberry said.
After Throneberry finished, Mayor Dwayne Hatcher invited Ron Lafferty, the Director of the Barren River Drug Task Force, to share a report summarizing 2023.
“Last year we completed a two-and-a-half-year investigation that we ended up arresting I think it was near 20 drug traffickers. This organization expanded not just from Cave City, Barren County and a few counties beyond. It went all the way to Arizona, California, Texas, the southern border and past that,” Lafferty said.
The majority of the cases involved in the arrest mentioned above will be prosecuted in federal court, according to Lafferty.
Next, Jessica Rogers, owner of the Bluegrass Vineyard in Smiths Grove, approached the council with a letter of intent to purchase the property located at 101 Broadway St. in Cave City.
“I have every intention of turning that building into either an event space for the area or turning it into a wine bar or wine type store,” Rogers said. “I get a lot of tourists who come out of Mammoth Cave to the winery. I feel like there’s a lot more who come to this area that I could address.”
Before being dismissed by Hatcher, BRADD Community Development Specialist Matt Pedigo passed out flyers to inform the council of CEDS mini summit that’s set for April 9t from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cave Area Conference Center.
The council set a tentative, special-called meeting for Feb. 26.
