On Thursday, Feb. 15th, 110 members of the Barren County Homemakers Club will gather at the Barren County Extension Office at 5 p.m. to delight in their annual International Night.
“This program has run for about 16 years,” said Publicity Chairman Edie Bell. “It’s a way for our members to broaden their knowledge of other countries.”
Over the past four years, the club has highlighted Ukraine, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Guatemala.
“We have a committee and an international chairman that meets to pick out a country each year,” Bell said.
At this year’s event, missionary Daniel Gaines will provide a PowerPoint presentation that’s focused on providing insight on what life is like for those who live in Tanzania, Africa.
“He’s an American Missionary who’s visited Tanzania,” Bell said. “And we’re going to make dresses for the young girls and young women and give them to Daniel in a few months to take to Tanzania.”
A display of Tanzanian artifacts will be the focus of the event. Clothes, currency, and the country’s flag that’s comprised of a black diagonal band that’s edged in gold and serves as a divider between a green corner at the top of the flag and a blue corner at the bottom. Members will be encouraged to view those items while listening to Tanzanian-themed music and munching on meals.
“They make a beef stew in Tanzania, so I’m making a beef stew,” Bell said. “We’ll also have a door prize for each family and our invited guests, Judge-Executive Jamie Byrd and the board of the Extension Office.”
Additionally, the Homemakers use this event to make a positive impact on the community.
“Each member who attends the event is bringing a can of food that will be donated to Bridge Kentucky and on all of the tables there will be a jar for change, and we’ll give that money to charity,” Bell said.
