A cool breeze fluttered across the soccer field as the adjoining parking lot filled up with parents, friends, cheerleaders, district personnel and the five members that make up the Barren County Board of Education, who met on March 14 in their regularly scheduled meeting wherein the board members discussed a land request, bids — both renewing current bids, approving new ones and authorizing the advertisement of others — and received an update on the district’s numerous construction projects.
The roughly two hour meeting began with the recognition of the Barren County High School cheerleading team that recently claimed the top spot at the UCA Nationals. The boardroom was filled with students, in the signature white, silk jackets, and family as Assistant Superintendent Cortni Crews played a six-minute video of the team’s routine.
“The board, along with Barren County High School, have ordered championship rings… but they’re not here yet and the [team] wanted to be surprised so we couldn’t show a picture,” Crews said. “We did the best we could, which is Ring Pops.”
To applause that filled the glass-walled room the members of the team formed a line to receive their candy jewelry.
After recognitions concluded, and the cheerleaders stepped outside for photos, the board members got an update on the various construction projects under the umbrella of BCHS renovation projects.
Dick Doty, a representative from Alliance Corporation, told the board members that the press box was “basically complete” with only a few “odds and ends” to tend to. He also mentioned that the slaughterhouse, the FMD building and portions of the art museum would begin this week into next. On March 19, Doty said, they would begin installing the gymnasium elevator now that the masonry shaft was completed.
Doty said the gymnasium glass railing and the college street renovations would begin over spring break and would likely be finished by graduation, as would the storage and restroom on the mezzanine level of the gymnasium.
The tennis court resurfacing and construction of a cover walkway are set to begin over the summer.
“There’ll be a lot happening at the start of the school year,” Matthews said. “When people come back in August they’ll really start to see the transformation.”
Lastly, Doty mentioned and explained the dozen change orders on the agenda.
The board also approved two request for bids for hay cutting and sports medicine. Twelve bid renewals were also met with unanimous approval.
Towards the end of the meeting the board adjourned momentarily and went into a District Finance Corporation meeting. According to finance treasurer Joe Murley the board approved a resolution giving Shelly Groce, board chairperson, authority to “to take any and all necessary and appropriate action” between the finance corporation and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, which requested a “small piece” of land on Happy Valley Road for $12,000.
After that the board reconvened before going into closed session for discussion of “proposed or pending litigation.” No action was taken when the members returned.
With all items meeting with approval or discussion the meeting adjourned. The next meeting is scheduled for April 11.
