A recently published poet based in Glasgow weaves words and emotions into a book that takes readers on a journey to answer a question that resonates with many: Who am I?

Read on to learn more about Kimberley H. Irwin and to discover an opportunity to meet her locally.

Who is K.H. Irwin?

“I wasn’t born here, but I was raised here. We moved here when I was one or two [from Florida]. My parents were in the school systems for years. My dad was a teacher and a coach, and my mom worked on the school board,” she said.

Though interested in many career paths, she majored in Corporate and Organizational Communications, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Western Kentucky University.

“I wanted to be a lot of things. I really liked archeology, optometry. I was all over the scale, but my main thing was that I wanted to do something that would give back and help anybody. I wanted to feel like I had a purpose. I ended up on communications because communications is writing. It’s oral speaking and presenting, which came easy to me,” Irwin said.

During the day she works in the finance sector as an accountant.  After hours she can be found attending soccer games and practices for her teenage son, taking photos of landscapes, typing thoughts into her notes on her phone, or tearing off pieces of paper throughout the day full of her reflections on life.

“Throughout my whole life I have been someone who journals here and there, leaving little scraps of sentences and paragraphs, ” Irwin said. “When I got to looking, I realized that it was a lot of things that I had been writing to get out. I noticed that on my Instagram account I would put words of encouragement with every photo that I shared. One day, something inside of me that said I need to get this out. This needs to come together. This will help more people than just me,” she said.

In the fall of 2023, Irwin took the final steps of becoming a published poet.

“Everyone’s a little lost. Everybody feels a little disconnected. I didn’t want to get to my 50s or 40s and look back and wonder what I did with my life,” Irwin said. “Once I got the manuscript together, I found Palmetto Publishing.”

Palmetto Publishing is a self-publishing company based in South Carolina that primarily works with independent authors.

What type of book did she write?

Light Truth Power: Finding Your Light When the Path is Dark is a short, but powerful book of poems and prose aimed at guiding readers towards rediscovering their true self.

“Each page has one poem or a prose in it,” said Irwin. “With this book I wanted to help others. I wanted to be an example for my son and others to encourage them to remember that you can do anything.  A lot of people will say that I can’t do this now because I have kids or because I’m divorced or because I don’ have time for it. But you can. You can do things and you can find the time; you just have to take the steps to do it. My book helps you remember that by guiding you towards discovering what feeds your inner self.”

In her book, Irwin explores many themes.

  • Resilience and Transformation
  • Rediscovering your inner self
  • Nature and Spirituality
  • Embracing Shadows
