Every fourth Thursday of the month, members of the Barren County Historical Society gather at the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center in support of the society’s mission to collect, document, and celebrate the stories, artifacts, and memories that define Barren County.

Since it’s re-establishment in 1973, members of the society have made it their goal to actively engage with the community through hosting educational programs, workshops, events, and publishing books to help foster a deeper understanding of the heritage of Barren County and Kentucky.

“Folks who were interested in history and genealogy wanted a society to have meetings to exchange information, ideas, and ways to do research. So, they formed a committee. The last of the original members passed away in December of 2023,” said Sam Terry IV, President of the society.

During this month’s presentation, Terry will use a PowerPoint presentation at 6 p.m. to guide attendees through some of the history of Bear Wallow, Kentucky.

“For this particular program, I’ll discuss Bear Wallow. A section in the north-eastern portion of Barren County. It once had a thriving village and has played a vital role in our state history for over 200 years or so,” Terry said. ” Today there are several people who live there on 31-E and the roads emanating off of it, but it’s not very active today. In the twentieth century it had a couple stores that operated there. In the nineteenth century, prior to the Civil War, there was the Bear Wallow Tavern or hotel, a women’s boarding school, churches, and much more.”

Whether it’s a lecture on a nearly forgotten part of Barren County or a speech on Civil War battles fought on Kentucky soil, the society is committed to preserving history and sharing it with others.

Those interested in joining the society are encouraged to visit the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center to fill-out and turn in a member application.

“Our dues are $25 per year for an individual. We have people who are members who are scattered all over the world. You don’t have to be a resident of Barren County to join,” Terry said.
