This article has been updated to clarify some language used, for example Zatt Property is leasing the building not, as previously stated, selling the building and the “garbage bags” on the front are “black construction paper” used to mitigate dust.

In July 2023, Zatt Property, a Glasgow-based company, began work with the goal of restoring the dilapidated, red and gold Morris Building at the intersection of South Green and Washington streets in downtown Glasgow. Though repair continues with the front of the two-story building currently being replaced with scaffolding and black construction paper, a local coffee and bakery shop has staked its claim on the soon-to-be refurbished building.

Much of the work is orchestrated by Mike Darnell, a member of Zatt Property, who expressed in prior reporting his hope that the building, either before or after the two year restoration effort, would be leased by a local business.

“We like to see old buildings not be torn down or fall down,” Darnell said. “They’re treasures. They’re expensive to restore, but they become assets to the community.”

His hope was realized when Savannah and Michael “Mikey” White with Danielle Certain, who own and operate Honey’s Coffee and Wild Flours Bake Shop, respectively, announced their intention to locate to the Morris Building. Prior to this announcement neither the coffee shop nor the bakery had a brick and mortar establishment but rather operated in mobile campers, which will continue to be busy before and after the addition of the building.

“When we started working out of the camper we never thought we’d have a brick and mortar; that was never my intention,” White said. “Mike invited us to come look at the space and…I could just see and feel it when I walked in and I was like ‘okay, yeah, this is where we’re supposed to go next.’”

“We just knew,” Certain added. “We just looked at each other and smiled and just knew that was the space for us.”

Based on records at the county clerk’s office, the Morris Building is 0.117 acres and has two stories. White said the three of them have a majority of the building including the upstairs — she did say there is an area in the back that will be another commercial building.

White and Certain said they did not have a “firm” move in date, but are hoping it will be sometime this year.

“I wish I had a firm date but something that’s really important to us is that we don’t want to over promise,” Savannah White said. “As soon as we have a firm timeline we definitely will. Our goal is definitely to be there this year.”

In addition to the uncertainty concerning the move in White also was unsure of what exactly, though she said she has a tentatively menu that they are currently not releasing to the public – the new shop would offer, but she did say the menu and design would take inspiration from the buildings history. She said they have a tentative menu that is not being released to the public currently as they are “trying to figure out how to make some things happen.”

She said, though they are not in the space yet, the shop will be a unique addition to the Glasgow community.

“It’s unlike anything Glasgow has seen before,” White said. “I don’t want to get too specific because we’re still trying to figure out how to do all the things we want to do, but it’s definitely going to be a really unique space.”
