With a solar eclipse set to occur on Monday, April 8, tracing a path of totality — the path where the moon will entirely cover the sun — across numerous states in the eastern United States, Barren River Lake State Resort Park is offering certified solar glasses and an opportunity to watch the celestial event.
The eclipse is set to travel through 13 states including Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Main and Kentucky. According to information provided by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the path of totality will primarily be in the western parts of Kentucky. The eclipse will enter the Kentucky section of its path at approximately 2 p.m. central time.
Barren County is not within the 115 mile wide pathway, nevertheless the county will experience a roughly 96 percent totality. Given this fact the park is offering a viewing of the eclipse beginning at 12:45 p.m. and running until 3:15 p.m. and will offer ISO and CE certified solar glasses — meaning they are safe for “direct observation of the sun” — for $2 at the front desk while supplies last.
Those dark-lensed glasses are important in safeguarding against solar retinopathy, or eclipse blindness, that can be caused by viewing the eclipse with the naked eye.
