Before presenting the seniors with their official appointments, Guthrie recalled his time as a student at West Point and discussed the process of being accepted into a military academy.
“It’s a difficult process. It’s not just something that you just wake up one day and say, ‘hey, I want to go to school,’ because they pick the best men and women,” Guthrie said. “You have to be academic. You have to be athletic, and you have to have leadership capabilities because you guys have chosen the profession of arms at 18 years old.”
After congratulating seniors Katelyn Huffaker and John Edberg, he called them up to receive their certificates.

“I don’t have a background in military, my family isn’t in the military at all, so this is a new experience for me,” began Huffaker. “I’ve never really been interested in any other colleges or doing my own research and things like that, so when the Air Force was brought up it lit a spark in me.”
Huffaker plans to join the Air Force Academy’s “Wings of Blue” parachuting team and become a leader in Cru, a Christian campus ministry.
“I’m very spiritual and religious and they have a great program there called Cru and I would love to dive in and be a leader in that,” Huffaker said.
Edberg received an appointment to attend the United States Naval Academy.
“Both of my parents retired from the Navy. It’s the branch that I grew up with, so that’s what I chose. Right now, I’m thinking that I want to major in aerospace engineering, but I ultimately want to be an aviator flying a jet,” Edberg said.
Having attended the 2023 summer seminar at USNA, Edberg is ready to become a plebe.
“I was there for four days and got to experience what it would like to be a plebe. It was amazing and really secured the fact that I want to go,” Edberg said.
