On May 15, art students from Barren County High School displayed their work in the school’s auditorium for family, friends and school personnel to view and admire.

The work on display spanned the artistic spectrum from hyper-realism and poster art to mythical and abstract. The semi-circle of white walls hung with the artwork featured the semester-long efforts of the school’s visual art classes — specifically visual art 1-4 — five students who won awards at the Kentucky Art Education Association’s Caveland Regional Show and Advanced Placement art students.

Cadence Pedigo, a senior at Barren County High School, is one of the handful of AP art students whose work was on display. According to Pedigo’s display her art “revolves around mythological beings.”

“I’ve been doing art since I was little,” Pedigo said. “It was kind of like an out for me. It lets me relax.”

Her display included at least eight pieces of artwork, each of which took roughly 12 hours of work, Pedigo said.

Jacarri Blackmon is another student with art in the show. Blackmon, who is a junior at the high school, said art was always her “go-to” when she was younger. Her artwork of pencil, paint and pens “revolved around exploring what the abnormal look like doing everyday tasks and jobs…”

Unlike Pedigo, who fears making art her career will lead to her loss of passion, Blackmon plans to put together a portfolio of her work and apply to universities geared towards art.

In the end, the showcase was well attended with families trickling into the auditorium tracing a path across the modestly-sized stage.
