Caverna Independent Schools Board of Education conducted the first reading of the proposed policy that would either permit or prohibit medical marijuana on school property.

Much like the policy discussed at the Barren County Board of Education meeting, Caverna, and its five Board of Education members, had to decide their position regarding medical cannabis on school property. Glasgow News 1 was not able to attend the Board of Education meeting on June 13, but Superintendent Amanda Abell told GN1 over the phone that “the board’s initial decision is to not allow medical cannabis on school property.”

“The board is going to do some more research before the second reading,” Abell wrote.

The medical cannabis question has recently come to the forefront of numerous public entities due to the recent passage of Kentucky’s 124- page Senate Bill 47, which was signed by Governor Andy Beshear in 2023.  Public agencies — like the courts, commissions and councils of Barren County, Cave City, Park City and Glasgow governmental bodies — are now deciding whether to opt in or out of allowing such businesses to operate within their authority.

This article will be updated with a more in-depth discussion on this subject with Superintendent Amanda Abell in the coming days.
