The Crossroads Life Center, a faith-based nonprofit that offers “free and confidential” family services that “promote and defend life,” seemed a good building to provide some relief from the hot and humid sun, but that proved untrue as the decently-sized crowd gathered in the small front room of the center to celebrate 20 years at the 123 E. Washington St. building.

Carla Estes, executive director at Crossroads Life Center, said the nonprofit offers free pregnancy tests, material assistance — like diapers, parenting classes, “post abortion support” and ultrasound referrals. When they initially opened the center in 2004 it was primarily a “pregnancy crisis center” before in transitioned in 2012 to what it is today.

“We’re celebrating our 20th anniversary in Glasgow,” Estes said. “We started this office as Crossroads Pregnancy Center, a kind of crisis center mainly for teenage girls…. In 2012 we expanded to Crossroads Life Center to incorporate the whole lifespan from the first breath to the last.”

At the ceremony Erin Hiles, Barren Inc.’s director of programs and events, spoke briefly before turning the microphone over to Estes. She said the center does not receive any government assistance and is run solely on donations and with the help of volunteers. The center also serves six counties including Barren.

After the ceremony people were asked to stay for food, fellowship and to receive small gifts from the center. Executive Director Carla Estes said the building has been used by the center since April 2004. To date, Estes said, the center had 156 unique visitors and 411 appointments.
