Glasgow woman indicted in healthcare fraud case

Carissa Uptegraff, 44, of Glasgow was federally indicted Thursday for “theft of medical products.”

According to the indictment, Uptegraff, a pharmacy employee, “stole pre-retail oxycodone, which had a value a $5,000” at two different pharmacies.

She is one of six individuals indicted in the Western District of Kentucky. The others being Shafi Abbas of Pendleton, Lawrence Peters of Louisville, Tammy Daniels of Louisville, Michael Boaz and Christopher Augustus both from Clinton.

These six indictments are in relation to the “schemes to defraud health care benefit programs and misuse of controlled substances.” The indictments also stem from the “Justice Department’s 2024 National Health Care Fraud Enforcement Action,” which, after a two-week nationwide law enforcement action, resulted in criminal charges against 193 individuals for their alleged connection in the fraud and opioid abuse schemes that resulted in “$2.75 billion in alleged false billing.”

According to a press release from the U.S. Justice Department, Uptegraff’s case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Ansari of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Kentucky.
