If you had asked 11-year-old Haylin Adams if she would be featured on a cable network television show broadcasted worldwide she likely would have laughed, but in 2021 that is exactly what happened. That year she boarded the roughly 4-hour-long flight to Los Angeles to compete on the Food Network’s Kids Baking Championship. The competition featured 12 children whose food was judged on presentation, taste and creativity.

“It was a really cool experience, like one of a kind,” Adams said. “That’s something most people don’t get to do and I never thought I’d get to do it.”

Adams finished fourth in the competition but her baking skills continue to be displayed in her Barren County community especially her popularized lemon curd cupcakes. On July 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. her baking skills were showcased as she displayed her cupcakes and caramels across the two tables erected in the The People’s Bank lobby in Cave City.

Adams was the inaugural young entrepreneur highlighted in the Young Entrepreneur Showcase hosted and put on by the bank.

“We want to recognize young people in our community that have the entrepreneur spirit,” Terry Bunnell, president of the bank, said. “We want to showcase the young people in our community people need to know about. This is our small way of helping them out.”

Currently Bunnell has young entrepreneurs — people under the age of 18 — who have signed up to be featured in the upcoming July showcases, which, he said, will be once a week with the hope of also doing a few showcases in August before the start of school.

“It’s a great opportunity to recognize and let people know what these young people are doing in our community,” Bunnell said.
