The newly formed Glasgow Pride, a group of like-minded individuals who work to “support diversity, equity, and inclusion in Glasgow,” will host the inaugural Glasgow Pride Family Picnic on Saturday, Aug. 3, at Beaver Creek Park from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Steve Jones, the current chair of the burgeoning nonprofit, said Glasgow Pride was formed primarily via social media after community backlash prompted the cancellation of the proposed Drag Bingo at Hall Place earlier in the summer.

“A bunch of us got together via Facebook and realized there needed to be a unified voice for the LGBTQ community,” Jones said. “There’s really only a small [portion] of [the Glasgow-Barren County] community that is anti-LGBTQ and we realized it’s very easy for that group to pick on one or two people but if we present a unified voice…it becomes more difficult.”

“We formed this group to give strength because there’s strength in numbers,” he added.

The event, in Jones’ words, offers an informal and safe setting for community members to interact with each other. It is free to the public and, again in his words, is “BYOE: Bring your own everything.” However, there will be cold water given out at the picnic as well as games, music and free stuff.

Jones said he has not experienced much backlash to the event from the community. Glasgow Mayor Henry Royse said the community members he’s interacted with have come more so with questions about the event rather than with complaints.

“We’ve had citizens ask about it and the answer is the people who are renting the park met the requirements to do so and are completely in compliance with our requirements,” Royse said. “Not one person has said to me ‘you ought to stop that.'”
