A paramedic with the Anchorage Middleton Fire and EMS in Louisville died Monday, July 29, while swimming in Barren River Lake.

Christian Smith, 35, was a sergeant paramedic and had been with the Anchorage Middleton department since 2014, according to the department’s social media post.

Cody Fox with Kentucky Fish and Wildlife confirmed Smith drowned after he jumped off a boat while on the lake. He also added Smith was not wearing a life jacket at the time. Smith’s body was recovered around Glasgow Cove near the state resort park.

Garland Gilliam said at about midnight he and the Glasgow Fire Department, the Kentucky State Police, and the Louisville Metro Police Department escorted Smith’s remains from the morgue at T.J. Samson Community Hospital back to Louisville.

“Mike Swift always said that we are all family we just wear different colored uniforms,” Glasgow/Barren County Emergency Management wrote on social media following the escort. “This was evident last night as Anchorage Middletown FD was escorted from Glasgow to Louisville.”

A fundraiser for Smith’s family has been set up by the Anchorage Middleton department requesting donations to support his wife and three children. The fundraiser has a goal of $50,000 and as of 2:37 p.m had raised  $10,410 with 133 donating.
