With roughly two weeks until the start of the academic year, the Barren County School District announced Joey Bunch as the new middle school principal during a press conference on July 31.
The position was left vacant when then-principal Michael Davis accepted the district position of director of elementary instruction earlier this month. Just two days after the Davis announcement the Barren County Middle School Site-Based Decision Making Council — which consists of Superintendent Amy Irwin, teachers Jaime Ayres, Amanda Moore, Gregory McCord, Catherine Ward, parents Ricky Garmon, Cynthia Craig and Shana Vincent — began the selection process to fill the school’s administrative position.
Bunch has been with the district since 2004 serving as a teacher, a guidance counselor, elementary school principal and, most recently, the director of transportation, a position he served in from 2021 through 2024 and was one he said he thoroughly enjoyed, but was lacking in youth interaction.
He began with the district as a teacher and guidance counselor at Hiseville Elementary School before being named as Austin Tracy Elementary School principal in 2017, during which time Austin Tracy received a four-star rating from the Kentucky Department of Education and was recognized as a top 20 schools of growth.
Academically, Bunch earned his Master of Science in Elementary Education from Western Kentucky University in 2004 before earning his master’s in school counseling four years later. He also received his administrative certification from the University of the Cumberlands in 2015.
His full remarks immediately following the announcement can be viewed here.
