Applications are now open for the 2025 United States Senate Youth Program, a “merit-based” program that takes high school students to the nation’s capital for a week-long study of the federal government and its personnel.
Two Kentucky students will be among the 104-member delegation chosen for this trip to Washington D.C. and will receive a $10,000 college scholarship with encouragement “to continue coursework in history, government and public affairs.” Individual school personnel is also encouraged to nominate high school juniors and seniors who have an interest in public service and government-related fields.
The application for this 63rd annual program is due by Sept. 30 with students’ transcript, two letters of recommendation, three essay response questions, a resume and a signature form.
Semifinalists will be interviewed in Frankfort on Nov. 2 with the Kentucky Department of Education announcing the two winners in December after which they will attend Washington Week — scheduled for March 1-8 — and “participate in meetings and briefings with high-level officials from each branch of the federal government.”
“Speakers typically include senators, a justice of the Supreme Court, leaders of cabinet agencies, other key policymakers and senior members of the media,” the KDE press release states.
The U.S. Senate Youth Program was created by Senate Resolution 324 in 1962 and has been sponsored by the Senate and funded by The Hearst Foundations.
